Four Hijabis
An interview-based one-act play.
This play originated as a journalism project to research Hijabi representation in Film and TV and its implications on Muslim women across the English-speaking world. A survey was conducted online to gather Muslim voices, and several interviews were conducted with Muslim women viewers of TV & Film, Hijabi screenwriters, and the leading researcher on Muslim representation, Al-Baab Khan.
After in-depth research was conducted, it was realized that writing this report as a play is the best way for the message to be heard, in performance, about performance. The medium was inspired by Anna Deavere Smith, Moisés Kaufman, and the Tectonic Theater Project.
